World of Warcraft 3d map and model viewer

If you’ve got a pc and are playing World of Warcraft, check out the WoWmodelview and WoWmapview, which let you fly through the World of Warcraft world and examine the 3d models in the game. This is kind of spoilerish in that you can take away some of the fun to be had exploring the world and discovering new monsters, but it can also be helpful if you’re struggling to work your way through one of the game’s instance dungeons and want to explore it offline without the penalty of dying repeatedly. Both are free, open source and relatively small downloads.

Huh, looks like the sourceforge project page is gone. I wonder if Blizzard issued a takedown because the software infringed on their rights somehow. Anyway I can’t get there either – looks like it’s gone.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they ditched their sourceforge domain name, instead you can scope this out here:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/wowmapview/

    and here:

    Hi there,

Sorry, I’m not likely to be much use to you in terms of helping you get the model viewer running on your own machine. My suggestion is, go over to the modelviewer site:

    http://www.wowmodelviewer.org/

and post in the forums over there – they have a lot of forum traffic and lots of folks who know how the software works and how to get it running.
