New weblog…

In case anyone’s interested, I’ve got a new weblog running here:

NWN Adventures

Which I’m using to track the adventures we have in Neverwinter Nights. The game completely rocks. The same cannot yet be said for the weblog but I have my hopes ;-)
Plus there’s an account, somewhat pathetic, of our first full adventure there to check out.

Best line in a videogame…

….ever. To date anyway. I keep forgetting to post this. I had great fun working my way through Freedom Force which is a great homage to the old golden age comics I grew up with as a kid. Towards the end of the game the heroes are confronting the ultimate bad guy. Straight out of an episode of Batman, he launches into a long screed about why he’s done all the evil deeds he’s done. He concludes with a manaical laugh and a declaration that:

I want to live…..Forever!!! [mwu ha ha ha ha ha]

To which one of the heroes responds:

Good for you. Join a gym

That cracked me up like nothing in a game has in ages. The whole game is full of great Batman-esque dialog; that line takes the cake though.

Geez, do I ever need to fix the stylesheets or what

Posting that pic of the spider below has reminded me, my stylesheets are a mess! Maybe I’ll find it in me today to work on them.

Or maybe not ;-)

When spiders attack

Check this guy out. With his legs stretched out he’s as big as my hand. He just moved into my bathroom. At first I was going to boot him outside, but I have an insect problem in the house every summer anyway, so maybe he’ll help get them out of the bathroom.

I upgraded to the latest redhat so that I can get the neverwinter nights server to run reliably on this machine.

Photo albums

Longtime readers will know that I’ve been trying for ages to get some sort of photo album system up and running. I’m most partial to Image Display System but I can’t for the life of me get it running correctly on this server. So meanwhile I’ve been playing around with desktop software that will build the albums for you in static html. I put a sample up of photos from a recent kayaking trip if you’re interested, which you can check out here:

6 29 2002 kayaking trip

The software I used is called Image Rodeo and it’s pretty good. I’d toyed with various packages on Mac and Win32, this is the first one I’ve found that I actually like.

Don’t mind the generic design - once I figure out how to get the template system running with Image Rodeo that should improve. And I’ll get those pictures of the Delaware River trip posted next, promise.

Bourne Identity

I caught The Bourne Identity this weekend with John. It’s a decent movie, nothing spectacular though. The action is well staged throughout, but the charisma between the leads was only so-so and there were a number of awkward moments between them where the director chose to let the camera run and…nothing happened. If it was a Julia Roberts flick she would have laughed and smiled and everyone would have thought it was charming. But it isn’t a Julia Roberts flick, and despite how much I loved Run, Lola, Run I didn’t think all that much of Franka Potente in this movie. There wasn’t much to her part but she didn’t do much with it either.

Matt Damon is credible as the super spy though, and the movie never really drags. In a way it’s a perfect summer movie. Lots of action, a little romance, enough of a plot to keep you interested, and a satisfying ending. I give it 2.5 stars, add half a star if you’re partial to spy thrillers or action movies.

Hot again

I’m on a morning schedule these days, but this heat is playing havok with it. It’s after midnight, I’ll be up at 6:15 or so, and yet I can’t sleep. So here I am posting more in one night than I have in a month to pass the time.

In case you were wondering why ;-)

Ooh-ooh that smell

For the past couple of weeks I have been getting this occasional whiff of really bad stank in the kitchen. Now and then it’s lead me to quest for the source, but until this heat wave hit I had no luck finding it. Then it got hot. Really hot. And the occasional whiff turned into the omnipresent stench. So this weekend I tore the kitchen apart trying to find it. In the back corner of the cupboard beneath the sink I found a lovely example of rattus deadus stinkus (that’s warner brothers latin for dead stinky mouse) stuck to a mouse trap I put in there about 2 years ago. It wasn’t pretty. I almost took a photo of it to commemorate my solving of the great stink mystery but I figured I’d spare you ;-)

Too hot for sleeping

Poor, poor me. It’s frigging hot this week, and I’ve been forced to abandon the upstairs and sleep on the floor in my living room.
