Remember the romans?

Why does my 240 gram portion of yogurt contain 42 grams of sugar? It’s just ridiculous. We’re all going to end up diabetic if we continue to eat like this. I remember reading about the romans and how, not knowing any better, they ate and drank from lead tableware, leading to lead poisoning, birth defects and so on. The difference is, we know better. That much sugar as a portion of food intake is just plain bad for you, and yet it pervades our foodstuffs, breakfast lunch and dinner. It’s out of hand.

End mini-rant. I’m switching to plain yogurt since I can’t seem to find any other low or no sugar kind.

Digital cable

The wonder-barons at Time Warner screwed me over with channel selections, selling me acccess to 3 HBO, 3 Cinemax and 3 Showtime and then halfway through the deal moving 2 of the Showtimes and 2 of the Cinemax’s over to digital channels I could not get. Of course they kept the price the same though. Then they raised my rates across the boards. My monthly cable bill jumped from $45 to $72.50 in the space of three months. Monopolies are wonderful, let me tell you. So I was left either cancelling cable back to the basics, or changing my channel setup since I was not willing to spend that much a month on tv.

I ended up switching to digital. Now I get over 200 channels of stuff, it’s unreal. My conclusion after my first experience with it last night is that there are too many channels. I tried to find something I wanted to watch by looking through Yahoo’s tv listings but they’re so frigging long that I gave up and just started surfing. Now I can spend over 15 minutes making one cycle through the channels. Ain’t the advances in technology great? ;-)
The only other issue is it takes longer to switch channels. More in a week or so after I’ve had it for a while.

Return to bachelorhood

And the first casualty is the living room aesthetics. Ugh. This is a temporary solution though, I’m getting a new tv which would not have fit on top of the old home entertainment center, so I got a new cabinet for the stereo and built the rig you see here. As soon as I get the new tv the egg crates will go and the center channel speaker will sit on top of the new tv or maybe I will build a shelf for he wall and mount it there.

oh, and I fixed the leaning tower of crates on the right, no worries there ;-)

Stereo more complex then my computer

I’ve complained about this before. Check out the wiring running into my stereo, this is without the outdoor speakers wired in too. This took me about 4 hours to deal with last night, though to be fair the wiring only took about an hour and a half. Still though, damn!

Too much fun not to pass on

Check this out. Homer simpson goes to town with about 100 sound clips. Imagine the prank phone calling fun you could have with that piped in through your telephone. It reminds me of a prank I pulled in college. A guy who was hosting the night’s party had a little doohickey hooked into his phone that could play a variety of sounds over the phone, about 20 of them, including barnyard animals, police sirens, ambulance sirens, doors slamming, windows breaking, and so on. The host had never held one of our frat parties at his place before so people were calling to ask for directions and the host was out on the beer run, so a friend and I were left in charge…

All the earth that’s fit to see

Looking for a cool desktop picture? Or maybe you’re interested in looking into aerosol accumulation in the atmosphere on the west coast of the US? Possibly you’re concerned about deforestation in South America? In all cases, this is the site for you. Tons of cool pictures of the eart from space in all kinds of spectrum, scale, and so on. Very cool stuff.

Lunch with Kevin and Marcia

I had lunch at one of my favorite places in portland, the vermont flatbread company. The occasion was Marcia’s birthday. I missed her surprise party a couple of weeks ago for lack of a safe ride home, so I took her and kevin out for lunch instead. The beer was great and the Gorgonzola, Pruciotto and roasted asparagus pizza was awesome. I snapped a pic of kev and marcia as well:

I was right

I did have the bad guy pegged 15 minutes into The Gift. Oh well. Skip this movie is my advice. It has a few interesting moments but all in all you can tell where it’s going almost from the very beginning.

Cool ebay score.

I won a signed copy of Hope Muntz’s Golden Warrior, which also came with a signed invitation to a new year’s party from the author himself. I thought it was pretty cool, the card itself is excellent too as you can see below.

Training day….

…is just ok. The plot takes a few interesting twists and Denzel Washington definitely does a great job, but at its core the movie is typical hollywood dreck elevated above average by decent performances and a slightly above average screenplay. You can check out other folks opinion as well. Overall I would say it’s a worthy rental but I’m glad I didn’t spend $8 to catch it in a theater.

deja vu in a movie about a psychic

Well,

Sorta. I’m sitting here watching The Gift and I have this horrible feeling 20 minutes into the movie that I know who dunnit. Damnit! Other than that the movie seems decent if not exceptional. More later after it’s done.

Iron Monkey is all that

I rented Iron Monkey on DVD this weekend. Very cool flick. The acting is poor to awful and the plot is straight out of a saturday morning cartoon, but still it’s a fun and entertaining flick with awesome kung fu action. If you’re a fan of kung fu flicks you’ll almost definitely like it. Plus some of the dialog is great for unexpected laughs - at one point a 12-13 year old kid exclaims

My kungfu is good!

After beating ass on a gang of thugs.

Yes it is son, yes it is ;-)

yet another stupid windows thing

So I’ve had my new machine up and running with Windows XP for about 3 weeks now. All in all I’m pretty happy with it. I did have to run out and get more ram because with 256mb it was struggling, but in general this has been the smoothest OS transition ever for me and it contrasts nicely with the nightmare of OS X on the mac boxes. But one issue haunts me. Every time I print a document, the OS helpfully points out that the document failed to print and offers to troubleshoot the problem for me. The only problem seems to be the OS not actually knowing what’s going on, because the documents are printing fine and sitting in the printer tray waiting for me. So what’s the deal? Who knows, like I said, yet another stupid windows thing.

Spam of the day

Today’s spam of the day brought to you buy some yahoo, who asks would you like a brain tumor? in the subject line. I didn’t read the mail but I have to wonder, who answers yes to that.

Amazon.com ruins my day

Until today I was a huge amazon.com fan. Then I logged on to order a few books and discovered that their number one music purchase recommendation for me was the new Celine Dion cd. Excuse me? What on EARTH have I purchased from them that led them to that conclusion? I’ll admit to some funky taste in music, but Celine Dion? Pulllleeease!

So I went to ebay and bid on the books instead of buying them from Amazon in revenge ;-)

Cool link of the day

It’s been a while. So that no one thinks I’m ignoring this space, I’ve popped in to post another cool link of the day, this one to a modern take on the reflectors you stick in your bike spokes so cars can see you at night. Enjoy. And Jesse? You’re getting one for xmas ;-)
